Hamilton Award The purpose of the Hamilton Award is to recognize high school students for superior service and achievement and to provide a mechanism to select students for the Hamilton Scholars Educational Program – the AHFA's four-year educational program. General The Alexander Hamilton Citizenship Achievement Award (“Hamilton Award” or “Hammie”) recognizes high school students near the close of their junior year who have exhibited superior achievement and citizenship during high school. Applications may be downloaded from the AHFA website each year in the first week of February. During that same week applications are mailed to accredited high schools throughout the United States. Applications are also emailed to counselors upon request. The application period closes in mid-April each year and awards are announced on this website in early to mid-May. Award Levels There are three award levels: Gold, Silver and Merit.
Gold Award: Gold award winners receive the following: a full tuition scholarship for participation in the Hamilton Scholars Educational Program; a $500 cash scholarship; an award certificate and other items. In past years these other items have included: an autographed copy of Ron Chernow's acclaimed biography of Alexander Hamilton, a proclamation signed by Doug Hamilton the fifth great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton, a Hamilton pin courtesy of the Hamilton family and letters of congratulations. Bio-sketches of gold winners appear on this website for three years and they are automatically enrolled in the Hamilton Scholars educational program and news releases are sent to city, state, and federal elected officials as well as local newspapers. Silver Award: Silver award winners receive a $250 cash scholarship, an award certificate and other items. Up to ten Silver winners also receive a full tuition scholarship for participation in the Hamilton Scholars Educational Program. In past years Silver winners have receive a package similar to the Gold winners: an autographed copy of Ron Chernow's acclaimed biography of Alexander Hamilton, a proclamation signed by Doug Hamilton the fifth great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton, a Hamilton pin courtesy of the Hamilton family and letters of congratulations. Bio-sketches of Silver winners appear on this website for three years. Merit Award: Merit award winners receive a Merit certificate and letters of congratulations. Beginning in 2008 the names and schools of Merit award winners will be posted on this website.
Who is eligible to receive the Hamilton Award? To be eligible for the Hamilton Award, students must be enrolled in an accredited K-12 program in the United States or its territories and have junior status. The award is made only to students with junior class standing. What judging criteria does the AHFA use to determine Hamilton Award winners? The AHFA evaluates three factors. These include: a set of criteria dealing with achievement, service, and with basic needs. The achievement set considers scholastic, entrepreneurial and personal achievement. The service set considers service to school and service to the student's community at large. Basic needs are based on a student's assumed future debt load following college as well as family income, living environment and community factor issues. When and where are the Hamilton Awards announced? Hamilton Awards are published on this website in early May of each year. In late June or early July bio-sketches of gold and silver winners are posted on this website as well as the names and schools of those receiving a merit certificates. News releases to student's local newspapers and notification to city, state and federal eleceted officials are sent out in late May or Early June.
